Cannabigerol (CBG) is a type of cannabinoid obtained from the cannabis plant. CBG is often regarded as the “mother” or precursor of all cannabinoids because the acidic form of cannabigerol (CBG-A) transforms into CBG, CBD, THC, and CBC (cannabichromene, another cannabinoid) when exposed to heat.

Compared to other cannabinoids, CBG is present in smaller quantities within cannabis plants. Most hemp strains contain only 1% CBG, while CBD levels range from 20% to 25%. Consequently, CBG-derived products are rare and tend to be more expensive. CBG oil is typically extracted from young cannabis plants. Young cannabis plants contain higher concentrations of CBG. As the plant matures, CBG is converted to CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids, leading to lower CBG concentrations. CBG doesn’t produce the psychotropic effects associated with THC making it an excellent holistic, all-natural medicine for pets and people.

The ECS has cannabinoid receptors (CB) throughout most of the body’s major organs, including lymph nodes, mast cells, and arrector pili muscles.^[5] There are two subtypes of cannabinoid receptors: CB₁ and CB₂. CB₁ receptors are found in canine brains (central nervous system), lungs, liver, and kidneys, while CB₂ receptors are located in their immune system, among other body parts. In a 2018 study, CBG is described as a non-psychotropic (non-psychoactive) compound that binds to CB₁ and CB₂ receptors and acts as a competitive antagonist (blocker) for CB₁ and the α2 adrenoreceptor. CBG blocks the release of proinflammatory cytokines and prostaglandin E2 in primary microglial cells, using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) defense.^[6]

In layman’s terms, when cannabigerol is detected in your dog’s system, it blocks signals that detect pain, causes appetite loss, and causes our pets to feel drowsy.
