Watching your dog struggle with hip dysplasia—whether they’re limping, reluctant to move, or showing signs of pain—can be heartbreaking and exhausting. You’ve probably explored pain medications, joint supplements, even physical therapy—yet the discomfort persists. Fortunately, there’s growing interest in a promising natural remedy: CBD oil. With its potential to reduce inflammation and ease chronic pain, CBD is gaining popularity among pet parents seeking relief for their dogs. But with so many products on the market, how do you know which ones are actually safe and effective? Some promise quick pain relief, while others focus on long-term joint support. So, what’s real, and what’s just clever marketing? This guide will break down the best CBD oils for dogs with hip dysplasia, backed by real results, expert insights, and key considerations to help you make an informed choice. Let’s dive in—and help your pup move more comfortably again.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil, or cannabidiol oil, is a natural extract derived from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). It is one of many compounds found in cannabis but is non-psychoactive, meaning it won’t get your dog “high” like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the primary psychoactive component in marijuana. The key difference between CBD and THC is how they interact with the body. While THC affects the brain’s receptors to create a “high,” CBD works differently, promoting relaxation and wellness without any intoxicating effects. That’s why CBD oil is considered safe for pets when used correctly.

Common Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia in Dogs

  • Difficulty standing up or lying down
  • Limping or favoring one leg
  • Decreased activity or reluctance to run, jump, or climb stairs
  • Bunny-hopping gait during movement
  • Stiffness, especially after rest or exercise
  • Noticeable loss of muscle mass in the hind legs
  • Whining or signs of pain when hips are touched

How Does CBD Work on Dogs with Hip Dysplasia?

CBD interacts with your dog’s endocannabinoid system (ECS)—a network of receptors that helps regulate pain perception, inflammation, and overall joint function. In dogs with hip dysplasia, inflammation and joint degradation can lead to chronic pain and reduced mobility. CBD may help reduce inflammation and relieve discomfort by supporting the ECS, easing stiffness, and promoting calmness. Over time, this can improve your dog’s comfort level and quality of life—helping them stay active and happy for longer.

The Science Behind CBD Oil & Hip Dysplasia

While still developing, current research offers insights into its effectiveness.

Scientific Studies

  1. CBD for pain and inflammation: A 2024 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found that dogs with chronic pain given CBD oil (2 mg/kg twice daily for 8 weeks) experienced a 46.2% reduction in pain scores, improved mobility (e.g., stair climbing), and decreased pro-inflammatory markers like TNF-α and IL-6, which contribute to joint discomfort. Importantly, the treatment was well-tolerated, with no major side effects, making it a safe option for long-term use. Dog owners reported noticeable enhancements in their pets’ quality of life, including better sleep, more playful behavior, and overall comfort.[1]
  2. Efficacy of CBD for canine osteoarthritis: Meta-analysis of 3 studies (117 dogs) found that oral full-spectrum CBD oil may reduce pain severity and help reduce how much pain affected the dogs’ daily lives (like walking or moving around).[2]

Anecdotal Evidence

Many dog owners have reported improvements in their pets’ mobility, stiffness, and discomfort after administering CBD oil for hip dysplasia. For instance, some have observed increased ease in walking, reduced limping, and improved overall quality of life in their dogs. While these accounts are encouraging, they are subjective and may be influenced by individual perceptions. Preliminary studies suggest the potential benefits of CBD oil in managing pain and inflammation associated with hip dysplasia; however, the evidence is still emerging, and more rigorous research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.

The Benefits

Here’s how CBD may help dogs with hip dysplasia:

  • May reduce joint pain and inflammation
  • Helps improve mobility and flexibility
  • Supports joint health and comfort
  • Improves overall quality of life

The veterinary community remains cautious regarding CBD use for canine joint issues like hip dysplasia. While some veterinarians acknowledge potential benefits, they emphasize the need for more comprehensive research to determine optimal dosages, long-term effects, and possible drug interactions. Pet owners must consult with a veterinarian before introducing CBD into their dog’s regimen. Watching your dog experience seizures—whether occasional or frequent—can be terrifying and emotionally draining. You’ve likely tried prescription medications, dietary changes, and even holistic therapies—yet the episodes keep happening. Here’s a hopeful alternative: CBD oil is gaining attention as a natural option to help manage canine seizures. But with so many brands on the market, how do you know which ones are actually effective and safe? Some products claim fast results, while others emphasize long-term support. So, what’s real, and what’s just hype? This guide will explore the best CBD oils for dogs with seizures, supported by real results, expert input, and the most important factors to consider before choosing a product. Let’s get into it—and help your pup find some much-needed relief and stability.

While THC affects the brain’s receptors to create a “high,” CBD works differently, promoting relaxation and wellness without any intoxicating effects. That’s why CBD oil is considered safe for pets when used correctly.

Common Symptoms of Seizures in Dogs

  • Sudden collapsing or loss of consciousness
  • Twitching or jerking movements
  • Stiffening of the body
  • Foaming at the mouth or drooling excessively
  • Confusion or disorientation after an episode
  • Temporary loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Unresponsiveness or staring into space

How Does CBD Work on Dogs with Seizures?

CBD interacts with your dog’s endocannabinoid system (ECS)—a system of receptors that helps regulate neurological function, inflammation, and overall balance in the body. In dogs with seizures, abnormal electrical activity in the brain can lead to convulsions and neurological distress. CBD may help regulate this activity by supporting the ECS, promoting calmness, reducing seizure frequency, and improving overall brain function—helping your dog live a more stable, comfortable life.

The Science Behind CBD Oil & Dog Seizures

While still developing, current research offers insights into its effectiveness, though findings are mixed.

Scientific Studies

  1. Fifty-one epileptic dogs treated with CBD: Administered at 9 mg/kg/day, CBD led to a significant reduction in seizure frequency in dogs compared to placebo. Specifically, there was a 24.1% decrease in seizure days for dogs receiving CBD, while the placebo group experienced a 5.8% increase.
  2. Twenty-six epileptic dogs tried CBD: In this study, dogs receiving CBD oil at 2.5 mg/kg twice daily for 12 weeks showed a significant reduction in seizure frequency compared to the placebo group. The median change in monthly seizure frequency was a 33% reduction for the CBD group.
  3. Effects of CBD in fourteen dogs with refractory epilepsy: In this study, CBD was administered at 2 mg/kg every 12 hours for 3 months; the treatment resulted in a significant reduction in seizure frequency and seizure days compared to the placebo. Specifically, 6 out of 14 dogs exhibited a ≥50% reduction in seizure events during the CBD/CBDA treatment phase.
  4. Cannabidiol in canine epilepsy: This review article discusses the current understanding of CBD’s role in managing canine epilepsy. It highlights that tolerability studies in both healthy dogs and those with epilepsy have demonstrated that CBD is generally safe and well-tolerated, with only mild to moderate adverse effects reported.

Anecdotal Evidence

Many dog owners have reported improvements in their pets’ seizure frequency and severity after administering CBD oil. For instance, some have observed reduced seizure activity and improved overall quality of life in their dogs. While these accounts are encouraging, they are subjective and may be influenced by individual perceptions. Preliminary studies suggest the potential benefits of CBD oil for canine epilepsy; however, the evidence is still emerging, and more rigorous research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.

The Benefits

Here’s how CBD may help dogs with seizures:

  • May reduce seizure frequency
  • Helps calm overactive neurons
  • Supports neurological health
  • Improves overall quality of life

The veterinary community remains cautious regarding CBD use for canine seizures. Watching your dog struggle with stiff joints, slow movements, and discomfort from arthritis can be heartbreaking. You’ve tried joint supplements, pain medications, and even orthopedic beds—yet your pup still isn’t as active or comfortable as they used to be. Here’s the surprising part: CBD oil could be the natural solution you’ve been looking for. But with so many products on the market, how do you know which ones are truly effective and which are just overhyped? Some brands claim immediate pain relief, while others suggest it takes weeks to see results. So, what’s the truth? In this guide, we’ll break down the best CBD oils for dogs with arthritis, backed by actual results, expert insights, and key factors to consider before making a purchase. Let’s dive in and help your dog move more comfortably, happily, and pain-free.

Common Symptoms of Arthritis in Dogs

  • Stiffness or difficulty moving
  • Limping or favoring one leg
  • Reluctance to jump, run, or climb stairs
  • Decreased activity or lethargy
  • Whimpering or signs of discomfort when touched
  • Swollen or tender joints
  • Changes in appetite or mood

How Does CBD Work on Dogs with Arthritis?

CBD interacts with your dog’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that help regulate pain, inflammation, mobility, and overall joint health. When a dog experiences arthritis, chronic inflammation in their joints can cause stiffness and discomfort, making daily activities more challenging. CBD helps by supporting this system, reducing inflammation, alleviating pain, and improving mobility—allowing your pup to move more comfortably and enjoy life again.

The Science Behind CBD Oil & Dog Arthritis

While still developing, current research offers insights into its effectiveness, though findings are mixed.

Scientific Studies

  1. Cornell University Study (2018): This study evaluated CBD oil’s pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy in dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Dogs received CBD oil at a dose of 2 mg/kg every 12 hours for four weeks. The results indicated a significant decrease in pain and an increase in activity levels among the dogs treated with CBD. Importantly, no observable side effects were reported by the owners.
  2. Baylor College of Medicine Study: Researchers in this study found that hemp-derived CBD treatment significantly decreased arthritic pain and increased mobility in a dose-dependent manner. Liposomal CBD at 20 mg/day was as effective as the highest dose of non-liposomal CBD (50 mg/day) in improving clinical outcomes. The treatment was well-tolerated, with no significant detrimental effects observed over the four-week analysis period.
  3. Pilot Study Colorado State University (2020): The addition of hemp-derived CBD oil appeared to positively impact dogs with chronic maladaptive pain from osteoarthritis by reducing pain levels, thereby enhancing mobility and overall quality of life. Of the 37 dogs diagnosed with chronic maladaptive pain, 30 exhibited improved pain management.
  4. A 12-Week Trial (2023): The study found significant decreases in Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI) scoring between the CBD treatment and control groups at 1, 2, and 4 weeks.
  5. Cannabidiol Plus Krill Oil Supplementation: In this study, dogs who received biscuits supplemented with both CBD and krill oil experienced a significant reduction in pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. While biscuits containing either krill oil alone or the combination of CBD and krill oil both led to pain reduction, the combined supplementation showed more pronounced benefits.

Anecdotal Evidence

Many dog owners have reported improvements in their pets’ arthritis symptoms after administering CBD oil. For instance, some have observed reduced pain and increased mobility in their dogs. However, these accounts are subjective and may be influenced by individual perceptions. While preliminary studies suggest potential benefits of CBD oil for canine arthritis, the evidence is still emerging, and more rigorous research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.

The Benefits

Here’s how CBD may help dogs with arthritis:

  • Pain relief
  • Anti-inflammatory effects
  • Improved mobility
  • Improves quality of life

The veterinary community remains cautious regarding CBD use for canine arthritis. While some veterinarians acknowledge potential benefits, they emphasize the need for more comprehensive research to determine optimal dosages, long-term effects, and possible drug interactions. Pet owners must consult with a veterinarian before introducing CBD into their dog’s regimen. Read our scientific-based article on all things CBD for dogs to learn more about the benefits and research.

How Long Does CBD Take to Help With Arthritis in Dogs?

CBD oil typically begins to relieve joint discomfort and inflammation within 30 to 60 minutes when used for acute flare-ups or mobility issues. However, for dogs with chronic arthritis, consistent daily use is often required for 1 to 2 weeks before you start seeing noticeable improvements in mobility, stiffness, and pain levels. Factors like dosage, your dog’s size, and the severity of their arthritic condition all play a role in how quickly it takes effect.

Every thunderstorm, car ride, or unexpected visitor turns your lovable pup into a trembling mess. You’ve tried training, calming treats, even those awkward doggy compression shirts—yet nothing seems to truly ease their stress. Here’s the surprising part: CBD oil could be the game-changer you’ve been searching for. But with countless products flooding the market, how do you know which CBD oil is effective and which are just overpriced gimmicks? Some brands promise instant relief, while others warn it takes weeks to see results. So, what’s the truth? In this guide, we’ll break down the best CBD oils for dogs with anxiety, backed by real results, expert insights, and what to look for before making a purchase. Let’s dive in if you’re ready to help your dog feel calm, safe, and happy again.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety in Dogs

  • Excessive barking or whining
  • Pacing or restlessness
  • Destructive behavior
  • Panting and drooling
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Hiding or avoidance
  • Changes in appetite
  • Compulsive behaviors (excessive licking, tail chasing, self-chewing)

How Does CBD Work on Dogs with Anxiety?

CBD interacts with your dog’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors that helps regulate mood, stress, sleep, and overall balance in the body. This system plays a crucial role in keeping your dog calm and emotionally stable. When a dog experiences anxiety, their ECS can become imbalanced, leading to heightened stress responses. CBD helps by supporting this system, promoting relaxation, and reducing nervous behaviors without sedating your pup.

The Science Behind CBD Oil & Dog Anxiety

While still developing, current research offers insights into its effectiveness, though findings are mixed.

Scientific Studies

  1. Single-Dose CBD Study (2023): A randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded study investigated the effects of a single oral dose of THC-free CBD (4 mg/kg body weight) on dogs subjected to stress-inducing scenarios, such as car travel and separation. Results indicated that dogs receiving CBD exhibited significantly lower cortisol levels, reduced whining, and appeared more relaxed compared to the placebo group. This suggests that CBD may alleviate acute stress in certain situations.
  2. Behavioral Response Study (2020): Another study assessed CBD’s impact on dogs exposed to fear-inducing stimuli. Administering 1.4 mg/kg of CBD 4–6 hours before testing did not produce a significant anxiolytic effect, indicating that CBD’s efficacy may vary depending on dosage, timing, or the nature of the anxiety-inducing event.
  3. Shelter Dog Study (2021): Research focusing on shelter dogs evaluated the effects of CBD (~1.25 mg/kg once daily for 45 days) on stress-related behaviors. Findings showed a decrease in aggressive behavior toward humans in the CBD group, though the reduction was not statistically significant. Other stress indicators, such as displacement activities and stereotypes, remained unchanged.

Anecdotal Evidence

Many dog owners have reported improvements in their pets’ anxiety symptoms after administering CBD oil. For instance, some have observed reduced fear during thunderstorms or decreased separation anxiety. However, these accounts are subjective and may be influenced by individual perceptions.

The Benefits

Here’s how CBD may help dogs with anxiety:

  • Calms the nervous system
  • Reduces stress hormones
  • Promotes relaxation
  • Encourages better sleep

The veterinary community remains cautious regarding CBD use for canine anxiety.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, has become a popular natural remedy for addressing various health issues in dogs, from anxiety and pain to inflammation and seizures. However, a crucial aspect of using CBD effectively is understanding how long it stays in your dog’s system. CBD typically stays in your dog’s system for at least 8 to 18 hours. The more potent the CBD is, the longer you can expect it to last in the system. However, the answer is not as straightforward as you might think. Many factors, including your dog’s dosage, potency, and size, affect how fast or slow dogs absorb CBD and how well it works once it’s inside your dog’s body. This post breaks down everything you need about CBD’s interaction with your dog once it’s in their system.

How Long Does CBD Stay In A Dog’s System?

CBD’s duration in a dog’s system can vary based on several factors, but a general understanding of its half-life provides a helpful starting point. The half-life of CBD in dogs is the time it takes for half of the substance to be eliminated from the body. According to studies, CBD has an average half-life of 4 to 9 hours.[1],[2],[3] To understand how long CBD will remain in the body, consider that it generally takes about 4-5 half-lives for a substance to be eliminated from the system almost entirely.[4] Here’s a breakdown of how long CBD will remain in a dog’s body with half-lives of 4 and 9 hours.

Half-Life of 4 Hours

  • After 4 hours: 50% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 8 hours: 25% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 12 hours: 12.5% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 16 hours: 6.25% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 20 hours: 3.125% of the CBD will remain.

Half-Life of 9 Hours

  • After 9 hours: 50% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 18 hours: 25% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 27 hours: 12.5% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 36 hours: 6.25% of the CBD will remain.
  • After 45 hours: 3.125% of the CBD will remain.

On average, CBD stays in a dog’s system for at least 20 to 45 hours. This is how long it takes for the CBD to be mostly eliminated from the dog’s system. However, traces of CBD can remain in the system for a longer period, potentially up to several days.

How Long Do The Effects of CBD Last On Dogs?

The effects of CBD are most noticeable during the first 8 hours after administration. However, the effects decrease over time as the compound is metabolized and eliminated from the body.

The chart below shows the peak concentration of CBD typically happens within 0 to 30 minutes to a few hours. This is when the effects are most potent. After the first half-life period, 50% of the initial CBD dose remains in the system, and the effects start to decrease. This reduction leads to a noticeable decrease in the intensity of its effects. After 12 hours, the effects continue to diminish and are barely felt.

How Understanding Half-Life Can Help Better Dose Dog CBD

Understanding the half-life is key for dog owners because it can help them determine the optimal dosage frequency to maintain consistent therapeutic levels in the dog’s bloodstream.

According to the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, a short half-life “may require more frequent dosing to maintain desired exposures and avoid unnecessarily high peak concentrations.”[5] Shorter half-lives mean the substance is out of the system much quicker and requires more frequent dosing to maintain its effects. On the other hand, an overly long half-life can create prolonged “accumulation and subsequent elimination.” This means a substance with a long half-life will typically last much longer in the body, which may pose accumulation problems if frequent dosing occurs and affects interaction with other substances in the body.

Most pet owners advocate for an eight-hour dosage interval, which may be appropriate given that after 8 hours, the CBD concentration in a dog’s body is typically between 25% and 50%. A 12-hour dosage interval might be best to avoid administering another dose too soon, which could lead to excessive accumulation and potential side effects.

However, when and how much CBD to administer will depend on the purpose of your dog’s CBD treatment. Read our CBD oil dosage for dogs guidelines article to understand the dosage better and assess how much CBD your dog needs.

Factors That Affect How Long CBD Stays In Your Dog’s System

Several factors can influence how long CBD stays in a dog’s system and how effectively it works. Here are the key factors:

1. Method of Intake

Different CBD products have varying absorption rates and bioavailability, influencing how quickly and efficiently CBD is metabolized once in the bloodstream.[6]

  • Sublingual absorption: Dog CBD oil (tinctures) is administered under their tongue, bypassing the digestive system and going directly into the bloodstream through the tiny blood vessels. This method is the most effective for pets because they will quickly feel the effects.
  • Oral ingestion: Dog CBD treats, pills, or capsules must pass through your dog’s digestive system. This process, called first-pass metabolism, means that the CBD is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and then metabolized in the liver before it enters the bloodstream. As a result, it takes longer for your dog to feel the effects of the CBD.
  • Topical application: CBD can also be applied topically to dogs’ skin through balms, shampoos, creams, or lotions. When applied topically, CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the skin but generally does not enter the bloodstream significantly. Instead, it mainly acts locally at the application site to potentially provide relief from skin conditions or localized discomfort.

2. CBD Type & Quality

Higher-quality CBD products often have higher potency and purity, meaning they contain a more concentrated CBD. This can result in a more prolonged presence in the system than lower-quality, less potent products. Some lower-quality CBD products may contain additives or fillers that can affect how CBD is metabolized and eliminated.

The type of CBD—whether full spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate—also impacts its duration in the system. Full-spectrum CBD generally lasts the longest due to the synergistic effects of multiple cannabinoids and terpenes, which may take longer to process than other CBD types.

3. Dog’s Size and Weight

Like most cannabinoids, CBD is fat-soluble. This means it gets absorbed and stored in the body’s fat cells. Dogs that weigh more generally have more fat cells, allowing them to store CBD for longer periods. Consequently, dogs with more fat cells may need more time to metabolize and clear CBD out of their system. Additionally, the higher the dog’s body mass, the longer it takes for CBD to take effect.[7] Larger dogs, with their greater body mass, tend to dilute the concentration of CBD in their bloodstream. As a result, the process of metabolizing and eliminating CBD may take longer. Typically, CBD will metabolize and clear more quickly.

4. Biology

A dog’s metabolic rate, which can vary based on age, breed, and overall health, affects how quickly CBD is processed. Dogs with faster metabolisms will metabolize and eliminate CBD more rapidly than those with slower metabolisms.

  • High metabolic rate: Younger, more active dogs generally have faster metabolisms, leading to quicker processing of CBD.
  • Low metabolic rate: Older or less active dogs may metabolize CBD more slowly, resulting in prolonged effects and staying in their bodies longer.

5. Frequency, Dosage & Potency

The frequency and amount of CBD administered also impact how it is metabolized:

  • Frequency: Regular administration of CBD can lead to accumulation in the body, potentially extending its presence and effects.
  • Dosage: Higher doses of CBD can take longer to metabolize and eliminate. Finding the right balance between dose and frequency is crucial for maintaining effective therapeutic levels without causing unwanted side effects.
  • Greater concentration: High-potency CBD products deliver more CBD per dose. This increased concentration means more CBD is available in the dog’s bloodstream at any given time.

Signs That CBD is Still Active in Your Dog’s System

  1. Increased Calmness:
    • One of the most common signs that CBD is still active in your dog’s system is an overall sense of calm. If your dog is typically anxious or hyperactive, you might notice that it is more relaxed and less reactive to stressors.
  2. Reduced Anxiety:
    • Dogs with anxiety issues often show significant behavioral changes when CBD is active. They may be less prone to pacing, excessive barking, or other anxiety-driven behaviors.
  3. Improved Mood:
    • Your dog may seem happier and more content. This can be observed through more frequent tail wagging, a willingness to engage in play, and an overall positive demeanor.
    • For dogs taking CBD for pain relief, signs such as reduced limping, less stiffness, or a greater willingness to move and play indicate that the CBD is still active.
  4. Pain Relief
    • For dogs taking CBD for pain relief, signs such as reduced limping, less stiffness, or a greater willingness to move and play indicate that the CBD is still active.
  5. Lethargy
    • While CBD can help calm an anxious dog, it may also cause mild lethargy. If your dog seems tired or sleeps more than usual, it could indicate that CBD is still working in their system.

Dogs That Should Not Consume CBD

CBD in dogs is known to be well tolerated. The biggest concern is any possible interaction between CBD and other medications.[8] CBD can affect the metabolizing of the different medicines in your dog’s system. This can alter the effectiveness of these other drugs, either by enhancing their activity or hindering the desired activity. Studies with humans have shown that this interaction has impacted drug concentrations in the blood.

These medications include blood pressure, cholesterol, anxiety drugs, antihistamines, corticosteroids, and antibiotics. On the bright side, other medications can have an enhanced effect when combined with CBD. Anti-seizure medications may be more effective, for one. CBD may also relieve pain, allowing users to rely less on NSAIDs and opioids. Also, when CBD was combined with chemotherapy, cancer treatments were more effective. However, you should always address these issues with your vet before treating your pet or combining medications with CBD.

How Long Does CBD Stay In A Dog’s System? — Conclusion

CBD can generally stay in your dog’s system for a minimum of 20 hours to 45 hours. However, the actual presence of CBD in a dog’s system can be detected longer. The length of time CBD remains in a dog’s system can be influenced by factors such as the dosage administered, the frequency of use, the dog’s metabolism, CBD concentration, and individual variations. It’s important to note that CBD is generally considered safe for dogs, but it’s always recommended to consult a veterinarian before giving your pet any CBD products.

As pet owners increasingly seek natural alternatives to support their dogs’ well-being, CBD has emerged as a popular option. Its potential to alleviate anxiety, reduce pain, and improve overall quality of life has made it a go-to supplement for many. However, one common question arises: how long does it take for CBD to work on dogs? On average, it can take between 20 to 90 minutes to work for mild health issues and days to weeks for more severe conditions. However, several factors drastically influence how quickly it takes effect. Knowing these factors can help pet owners set realistic expectations and ensure their dogs receive the optimal benefits of CBD.

How Long Does It Take For CBD to Work On Dogs

How long it takes for CBD to work on dogs depends on the type of CBD product and the treated condition.

Type of CBD Product

The form in which CBD is administered significantly affects how quickly it works. Common CBD products for dogs include oils, treats, capsules, and topicals. Each product type has a different absorption rate:

  • CBD oils: Typically administered sublingually (under the tongue) or added to food, CBD oils are known for their fast absorption and onset time. The effects can often be noticed within 20-30 minutes. CBD oil has the fastest rate of absorption because the oil enters the bloodstream directly when applied orally through your pet’s mucosa.
  • CBD treats: While convenient, CBD treats need to be digested by the stomach and liver, which can delay the onset of effects. Generally, it takes about 45-90 minutes for dogs to start feeling the benefits.
  • CBD capsules: Similar to treats, capsules must pass through the digestive system, so the onset time can range from 30-90 minutes.
  • Topical CBD products: Applied directly to the skin, topicals (i.e., pet CBD shampoos, sprays, balms) are primarily used for localized relief and may take effect within 15-30 minutes, depending on the application area. CBD topicals do not penetrate deep enough into the skin to pass through blood-brain barriers and enter the bloodstream. However, it does provide localized effects when applied through topical means since it absorbs through the pores and hair (fur), working with the CB2 receptors underneath the skin and hair follicles.

Method of Administration

The way CBD is administered also affects its onset time. Sublingual administration (under the tongue) allows faster absorption into the bloodstream than oral ingestion, which involves the digestive tract.

Dosage and Potency

The amount of CBD given and its concentration can influence how quickly it works. A higher dose or more potent product may produce quicker and more noticeable effects. However, starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it is essential to find the optimal amount for your dog. Read our Dog CBD oil dosage guide to learn how different dosage amounts and potency can affect the onset of CBD in dogs.

Dog’s Size, Weight, and Metabolism

Every dog is unique, and factors such as size, weight, and metabolism can impact how CBD affects them. Larger dogs may require more time to feel the effects than smaller dogs and those with faster metabolisms might process CBD more quickly.

Dog’s Health Condition and Severity of Symptoms

The specific health issues being addressed can also determine how quickly CBD takes effect. For instance, dogs with severe anxiety or chronic pain may experience noticeable relief sooner than those using CBD for general wellness or mild symptoms.

Understanding Onset Times for More Severe Conditions

While CBD can offer relatively quick relief for conditions like anxiety, mild pain, and general wellness, more severe conditions may require a longer period of consistent use to see significant improvements. For chronic or severe conditions such as cancer, severe arthritis, or a damaged coat, it may take several days to weeks for CBD to produce noticeable results. This longer timeframe is due to the complexity and severity of these health issues, which often require a sustained approach to achieve therapeutic benefits. Consistency is key when using CBD for severe conditions. Pet owners should administer CBD daily and monitor their dog’s progress, adjusting the dosage as needed in consultation with a veterinarian. Patience is essential, as the body needs time to respond to the therapeutic effects of CBD.

How to Ensure CBD Works Properly For Your Dog

Monitoring your dog’s response to CBD and adjusting the dosage as needed is essential. Here are some guidelines to help you manage this process effectively.

Signs That CBD is Working

Recognizing the signs that CBD is effective can help you determine if the current dosage is appropriate. Positive signs include:

  • Reduced anxiety: Your dog appears calmer, less stressed, and more relaxed.
  • Pain relief: Observable reduction in pain-related behaviors, such as limping or whimpering.
  • Improved mobility: Increased activity levels and willingness to move or play.
  • Enhanced appetite: Better eating habits and interest in food.
  • Overall well-being: A more alert, happier, and healthier demeanor.

When and How to Adjust Dosage

Adjusting the CBD dosage may be necessary to achieve the desired effects. Follow these steps to adjust the dosage safely:

  • Start low and go slow: Begin with the lowest recommended dose and gradually increase it.
  • Increase gradually: If you don’t see the desired effects after a week, slightly increase the dose. Monitor your dog for another week before making further adjustments.
  • Consult your veterinarian: Before making significant changes to the dosage, consult with your veterinarian to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Observe and record: Continue to monitor your dog’s response and keep detailed records to help guide any further adjustments.

How Long Will the CBD Effects Last on My Dog?

After CBD starts to work, another question is how long will the therapeutic effects last. Generally, the effects of CBD oil can last between 4 to 8 hours, while treats and capsules may provide relief for slightly longer due to the time needed for digestion. Topical CBD products, used for localized relief, can also vary in duration but typically last a few hours. For a more detailed understanding of how long CBD effects can last on your dog and tips on maximizing its benefits, check out our comprehensive article on How Long Does CBD Last in Dogs Systems? This guide delves deeper into the factors influencing CBD duration and offers practical advice to maximize its benefits according to your needs.

The Bottom Line

CBD offers promising benefits for dogs, addressing various health issues from anxiety and pain to chronic conditions and overall well-being. By understanding the factors influencing CBD’s onset time and monitoring your dog’s response, you can effectively incorporate this natural supplement into their health regimen.

Remember that CBD can provide quick relief for conditions like anxiety and acute pain, while more severe conditions may require consistent use over days or weeks. You should keep a detailed record of your dog’s response to CBD and adjust the dosage as necessary. It’s crucial to consult with your veterinarian before starting CBD treatment for your dog. A veterinarian can provide personalized advice based on your dog’s specific health needs, ensure safe interactions with other medications, and help you determine the appropriate dosage. Regular check-ins with your vet will also help monitor your dog’s progress and make any necessary adjustments.

What Is A CBD Dog Shampoo?

Dog CBD oils and CBD dog treats are widely recognized as the most popular products derived from CBD. However, CBD-infused hair and coat products, including CBD dog shampoos and conditioners, are also available for dogs.

A CBD dog shampoo is a natural solution that aids in repairing and protecting the skin barrier, enhancing hydration, and improving skin health in canines. In addition, CBD contains amino acids that promote shininess and safeguard hair from split ends.

Dog shampoos with CBD oil can help treat dry skin, allergies, and other ailments in dogs. CBD-infused shampoos contain therapeutic compounds that relieve symptoms and restore the coat’s condition to its original luster. CBD dog shampoos do not include THC or cause intoxicating effects.

How Does CBD Shampoo Work In Dogs?

CBD interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which has cannabinoid receptors (CB) in major organs, including a dog’s hair follicles and skin.[1] [2]

Pet CBD shampoos target cannabinoid receptors in a dog’s skin and hair. When CBD-infused shampoo touches your dog’s coat, it binds to the cannabinoid receptors on your dog’s fur and skin and signals the ECS to take action.

All mammals, including dogs, have an ECS. The ECS plays an essential role in regulating bodily functions to maintain balance. Research has linked the ECS to help restore balance in processes and functions such as skin and nerve function, stress, pain, mood, sleep, inflammation, immune system responses, and various other bodily functions and systems.[3]

Because CBD acts as a key that activates the ECS, once you apply shampoo to your dog, the ECS is prompted to start its homeostatic and therapeutic functions, including the modulation of bodily functions and bringing stability.

For instance, if your dog has an itchy coat, bathing him with CBD-infused shampoo powers the ECS to kick in and help your pet’s body return to its ideal operation (homeostasis).

How Does CBD Help Skin & Coat According to Research

Here are some important research-backed findings supporting the benefits of CBD on dog coats and skin health.

  • Targets skin disorders. One study indicated that the endocannabinoid system might target the treatment of immune-mediated and inflammatory conditions such as allergic skin diseases in dogs, such as atopic dermatitis (an itchy skin disease in dogs).[2]
  • Promotes homeostasis. Another research found that ECS is crucial in maintaining skin “homeostasis,” or the balance of skin cells and their proliferation, survival, and more.[4]
  • UVA protection. It’s also been shown that CBD could act as a cytoprotective compound (a compound that protects cells against harmful agents) against UVA or UVB Irradiation.[5]
  • Promtes skin healing. In a study on humans, their skin conditions showed significant improvement when CBD ointment was used for three months on participants with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and scars.[6]
  • Promote hair growth. CBD has stress-relieving and nourishing properties that may support hair growth and development. Moreover, the relaxing properties of CBD can calm and soothe frayed nerves and release tension in muscles on the scalp.
  • Promotes sebum production. According to one study, CBD can promote sebum production. Sebum is an oily substance that moisturizes and protects the skin keeping your dog’s coat shiny and soft. CBD may have an anti-inflammatory effect on sebocytes, the skin cells that produce sebum. As an anti-inflammatory, CBD may help reduce swelling, pain, and redness in skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.[7]
  • Hemp CBD-derived oil benefits. It’s worth noting that most of the pet CBD shampoo companies reviewed here also use hemp seed oil in their formulas. This is important because research observed that hemp seed oil increased essential fatty acids in the skin and relieved atopic dermatitis symptoms.[8]

Benefits of CBD Dog Shampoos

Cannabidiol (CBD)-containing dog shampoos have unique benefits over traditional dog shampoos. CBD-infused pet shampoos may help with the following:

  • Skin allergies symptoms
  • Dandruff
  • Sooth hair
  • Dermatitis
  • Skin dryness
  • Flaky, greasy, and odorous skin
  • Dull coat
  • Itching
  • Skin swelling and inflammation
  • Rashes and sores
  • Improved sebum production
  • Dehydrated skin
  • Hair loss

What To Look For In CBD Dog Shampoos

CBD dog shampoo shoppers should consider the following when looking for the best pet CBD shampoo.

  • Reliable seller. Respectable CBD manufacturers adhere to specific manufacturing and ingredient sourcing guidelines.
  • CBD from a high-grade source. CBD oil is derived from American hemp farms.
  • Third-party tested CBD dog shampoos. Test results confirm the presence of CBD and cannabinoids and the absence of pesticides, solvents, and other unwanted chemicals.
  • Absence of chemicals. It should be free of sulfates, parabens, artificial fragrances, artificial colors, mineral oils, and other harmful ingredients such as sodium chloride, a chemical ending in -sulfate. These materials can make hair dry, limp, and damaged.

Green Roads Certificate Of Analysis (Lab Sheet Pet CBD)

We like that Green Roads third-party tests every batch to ensure purity, potency, and safety.

They make it simple for customers to validate that what’s on the product’s label (i.e., CBD content, THC, etc) is accurate.

We only had to scan the QR code on the packaging with our phone to view our product’s lab results. We verified the lab results for accuracy, and here is what we found.

*Analysis report performed by Kaycha Labs on July 27, 2020, & Oct 14, 2020 (Terpenes only)

  • The product has the expected amount of CBD
  • Non-detectable levels of THC
  • I was tested for unwanted or harmful substances like pesticides, metals, solvents, or microbial. None detected!
  • According to its analysis report, it does not contain any other cannabinoids, so it technically isn’t a “broad spectrum” CBD oil.

For a more detailed lab result analysis, you will find Green Roads’ Lab Sheets for the Medium Dog Drops product below.

Green Roads Dog CBD Oil Dosage

CBD dosing can be challenging to get right initially since there is no official dosing standard, and each manufacturer has unique dosing guidelines. To learn all about CBD dosing, check out our guide.

Here’s the lowdown of Green Roads’ dosing recommendations for their pet CBD products.

  • For dogs under 15lbs, give 1ml of the small dog formula
  • For dogs, 15 to 50 lbs, give 1ml. of the medium dog formula
  • For dogs over 50 lbs, give 1ml. of the large formula

Pro Tip: If your pet is new to CBD, we recommend starting with half (50%) of the recommended amount and increasing from there. Always talk to your vet first. However, some pets may require more CBD. Increasing the amount of CBD is acceptable but do so slowly over time.

Emmie’s Experience

5 star rating

5 star rating

My dog Emmie started using Green Roads CBD drops for dogs a little over a month ago. Emmie was about 3.5 years old when she began battling anxiety, digestive issues, and food allergies. I had tried every ‘calming’ treat on Amazon that I could find and melatonin, but nothing worked. However, within about 10-15 minutes of receiving her first dose of CBD, Emmie was lying on my bed, calmer than ever – she even took a nap, which was amazing. Now, I only use CBD when there is a big storm, fireworks, or when I have to leave her alone at home. She is a calmer and happier pup.

Emmie also used to experience tummy troubles and allergic reactions, which made her nauseous and sometimes caused her to vomit. We are grateful that we haven’t seen any form of gastrointestinal distress since we started her on CBD.

I started with a very low dose to ensure Emmie had no side effects and gradually built up to the recommended dosage. We could tell that it was helping relieve Emmie’s problems. It gives me peace of mind to know that we can help her with anxiety through an all-natural product. I have it ready to go and would recommend it to anyone!

My Dog’s Experience With Green Roads Dog CBD Oil

We tested Green Roads CBD drops on our furry friend Emmie to see if she would find them beneficial. We looked for signs of health improvements, adverse effects, and overall well-being. Here are the results.

Day 1

  • I gave Emmie a small dose of Green Roads CBD drops (starting with the lowest recommended dose for her size) to observe how she reacted—I monitored Emmie closely for any signs of discomfort or adverse reactions.

Week 1

  • Continue giving Emmie the same small dose of Green Roads CBD drops once daily. Noticed slight changes in her anxiety levels, especially during events that generally cause her stress, such as storms or being left alone.

Week 2

  • Gradually increase the dose of Green Roads CBD drops to the recommended amount for Emmie’s size, if she has shown no adverse reactions.

Week 3

  • By this time, I noticed more significant changes in Emmie’s behavior, such as reduced anxiety during storms and a calmer demeanor when left alone.

One Month

  • Emmie’s anxious behavior, mood, and health seem more manageable. We decided to talk to our veterinarian again to discuss the long-term use of CBD for Emmie.

What Customers Think About Green Roads Dog CBD Oil

Here is what real-verified customers had to say about this Green Roads Dog CBD Oil.

Green Roads Pet CBD Positive Review

“I’ve tried multiple types of CBD for my dog. This is the only one that has had a substantial effect on him. I had to use a higher dose, which I did so in very small increments and very carefully, to see a difference. Which does make us a pretty expensive option. However, it has really helped him to be calmer and able to handle stressful situations.

Hallie F. Verified Buyer

My Aussie is very high strung and perpetually anxious. One thing she does all night long is chase lights and shadows. I was about to take her to a very pricey canine behaviorist when a friend suggested CBD oil. I bought some from Green Roads and instantly noticed a change. She’s still silly and a little anxious, but much calmer. She no longer runs around the house jumping on the furniture or walls trying to get lights 😂 so that’s a major improvement. But what I love the most is that she’s still the same Zoe. I’m glad I didn’t have to go with something that would alter her mood more. I’ve recommended it to several others. It tastes good, and she seems to like it. I give my 40 lb Aussie about 1 mL and not every day. My Husky doesn’t need any but wants what the other has so I give her a teeny tiny drop for a dose. I’ve never been super brand loyal but I just ordered more, 4 more bottles in fact!

Amanda M. Verified Buyer

Green Roads Pet CBD Negative Reviews

“Been using this for about a month now. Our 11-year-old Pembroke Corgi was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy last year in August ‘18. He’s always had mild anxiety issues with driving or fireworks. Now with a progressive disease that’s slowly leaving him lame in the hindquarters, I am searching for something to help ease those issues and the new ones that come with a loss of mobility. So far, there has been no obvious change with a 1ml two times a day dosage. We are very active in his care and are hopeful we will find something that helps.”

Meghan F.Verified Buyer

“I’ve tried CBD dog treats and oils. They all seem to have the same effect on him, terrible dog farts. He also doesn’t like the taste.”

Doralee M.Verified Buyer

Overall, upon a visual survey of customer satisfaction for Green Roads, the positive reviews far outweigh the negative. Out of the thousands of reviews submitted by real Green Road customers (on Green Roads, Trustpilot & review platforms combined), more than 90% are positive reviews.

I’ve put together the most comprehensive guide to learning all about CBG oil for dogs, including our recommendations for the best CBG oil for dogs brands. You’ve probably heard of CBD (cannabidiol), but what about cannabigerol, also known as CBG? Similar to CBD, CBG is a cannabinoid, which means it’s one of the many chemicals found in the cannabis plant. However, there has been a recent surge of interest in the potential benefits of CBG for dogs. Before giving it to your dog, there are key things you need to understand. Today, we’ll explore the difference between CBD and CBG, its benefits, CBG dosage for dogs, risks, research, and everything in between. This comprehensive guide will help you safely incorporate CBG tincture for dogs. Plus, we have reviewed the leading CBG oil brands for dogs. Let’s dive right in!

Best CBG Oil For Dogs At A Glance

What Is CBG Oil For Dogs?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a type of cannabinoid obtained from the cannabis plant. CBG is often regarded as the “mother” or precursor of all cannabinoids because the acidic form of cannabigerol (CBG-A) transforms into CBG, CBD, THC, and CBC (cannabichromene, another cannabinoid) when exposed to heat.

Compared to other cannabinoids, CBG is present in smaller quantities within cannabis plants. Most hemp strains contain only 1% CBG, while CBD levels range from 20% to 25%. Consequently, CBG-derived products are rare and tend to be more expensive. CBG oil is typically extracted from young cannabis plants. Young cannabis plants contain higher concentrations of CBG. As the plant matures, CBG is converted to CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids, leading to lower CBG concentrations. CBG doesn’t produce the psychotropic effects associated with THC making it an excellent holistic, all-natural medicine for pets and people.

Types of CBG Oil For Dogs

There are three main types of CBG oil extracts.

CBG Isolate: 99.99% pure CBG, no THC, and terpenes.

Broad-spectrum CBG oil: CBG and terpenes, no THC.

Full-spectrum CBG oil: CBG, multiple components of the cannabis plant, terpenes, other cannabinoids, and less than 0.3% THC. This type contains THC but in minimal amounts, which is unlikely to affect your dog. It produces the entourage effect. This means enhanced effects of cannabinoids, such as CBG, when multiple compounds synergistically work together rather than alone.

The Difference Between CBD vs CBG For Dogs

While research on CBG is still limited, there is some preliminary difference between CBD and CBG for dogs.

  • Pharmacology. CBD and CBG also activate receptors differently. CBD helps to produce and regulate endocannabinoids, while CBG works on the receptors.[1] One study found that CBG behaves as an antagonist (blocker) at that receptor, whereas CBD has strong anti-nausea effects, which means it acts like an agonist (activator).[2]
  • Balancing effects. CBD is typically calming, while CGB usually energizes. It works as a catalyst for energy. The two balance each other out when taken together.[3]
  • Molecular structure. Their molecular makeup is different. Hence, their impact on the body is different. CBG is a hydrophobic lipid that contains a 21-carbon chain plus an aromatic hydrocarbon ring that reads C21H32O2. On the other hand, CBD’s chemical formula (which is the same as THC’s) is C21H30O2. The difference lies in the way the atoms are arranged. That gives CBD and CBG different chemical properties, affecting your pet’s body differently.
  • Benefits. Studies indicate that CBG may have therapeutic potential in treating neurologic disorders (e.g., Huntington’s disease).[4] CBD is more effective with the physical body – relieving pain and inflammation.
  • Concentration. CBG is found in much lower concentrations (1%) in the hemp plant than CBD and THC.

How Does CBG Oil Work In Dogs?

CBG interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is responsible for balancing the body’s major systems, promoting homeostasis, and building and maintaining overall health. Humans, dogs, and all vertebrate animals (i.e., mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, and reptiles) have an ECS.

The ECS has cannabinoid receptors (CB) throughout most of the body’s major organs, including lymph nodes, mast cells, and arrector pili muscles.[5] There are two subtypes of cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in canine brains (central nervous system), lungs, liver, and kidneys, while CB2 receptors are located in their immune system, among other body parts. In a 2018 study, CBG is described as a non-psychotropic (non-psychoactive) compound that binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors and acts as a competitive antagonist (blocker) for CB1 and the α2 adrenoreceptor. CBG blocks the release of proinflammatory cytokines and prostaglandin E2 in primary microglial cells, using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) defense.[6]

In layman’s terms, when cannabigerol is detected in your dog’s system, it blocks signals that detect pain, causes appetite loss, and causes our pets to feel drowsy. It also builds up anandamide, a neurotransmitter that helps to enhance pleasure, increase motivation and stimulation, regulate eating and sleeping habits, and reduce pain.[7] The literature notes that CBG has a high affinity to bind to CB1 and CB2, making it highly efficient at delivering its benefits.

Researched Backed Benefits

Cancer A study on rats showed cannabigerol can inhibit abnormal cell proliferation. The research demonstrated evidence of CBG’s anti-tumorigenic properties by inhibiting the formation of mouse skin melanoma cells.[8] Similarly, research published in July 2021 suggests that CBG is a potent antioxidant agent, protecting the endocannabinoid system against disease-causing free radicals (chemicals-harming cells).[9]
Additional research on the effects of CBG on rats with colon cancer showed CBG blocking the receptors that cause cancer cell growth and inhibiting the growth of colorectal cancer cells.[10]
Appetite CBG stimulates appetite and could treat appetite problems for cachexia, appetite loss, wasting in humans, or other appetite issues associated with eating disorders, AIDS, and cancer. In a study of 16 rat test subjects, CBG was found to more than double food intake.[12]
Glaucoma Scientists found that applying CBG to the eyes of cats with Glaucoma reduces intraocular eye pressure and increases fluid produced by the eye, maintaining healthy eye pressure and providing the eye with nutrition.[17]
Nausea and vomiting The treatment of nausea, sickness, and vomiting with CBG is weak, ineffective, and provides little relief from symptoms.[18]
Pain & Inflammation CBG has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, benefiting dog conditions such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. Based on a study conducted on mice, the compound may reduce inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease.[19]
Anti-bacterial agent Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that cannabigerol kills bacterial growth. CBG effectively eliminated many methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a bacteria resistant to most antibiotics.[11] CBG outperformed all of the cannabinoids tested and was just as effective as vancomycin, a powerful antibiotic.
Neuroprotection Another study published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics tells us that CBG exhibits affinity at the cannabinoid receptors but appears to be unique in its interactions with α-2 adrenoceptors and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT1A). Adndroceptors mediate the central and peripheral actions of neurotransmitters, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. Meanwhile, 5-hydroxytryptamine is a serotonin receptor, the key hormone stabilizing our mood, well-being, and happiness. The paper indicates CBG may have therapeutic potential in treating neurologic disorders (e.g., Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis neuropathic pain).[3][13][14][15]
Moreover, when comparing the neuroprotective qualities of CBD and CBG, the latter (CBG) was significantly more potent at reducing neurotransmitter depletion than CBD, even in lower concentrations.[16]
Anxiety Compared to CBD, CBG may offer more potent anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. It’s been shown that CBG’s anti-anxiety effects directly result from boosting GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) absorption. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that produces a calming effect. CBG also stimulates Alpha-2 receptors, which smooth muscle contraction in the body by producing a relaxing effect. This explains why CBG could be a better way to have a calming effect on the central nervous system, help decrease blood pressure and anxiety, and reduce the intensity of heart palpitations.[20]

While CBG dog-specific studies have not been published yet, human and animal research studies have shown that CBG could prevent or alleviate symptoms of certain diseases. According to research, other benefits include treating bladder dysfunctions, mental focus without drowsiness, mood, pleasure, reward, sleep, and much more.[21] While these studies are promising, it is essential to remember that research is still underway to gain a more conclusive understanding of CBG’s potential benefits and effects.

Risks & Side-Effects Of CBG For Dogs

Very little is known about the side effects of CBG. Rats seem to tolerate it well so far.[22] According to anecdotal evidence, Humans also respond well without adverse effects. Currently, there are no reports of short—or long-term health problems from consuming CBG products.

However, side effects or risks are similar to CBD or cannabinoids in general, including:

  • Overdosing (always follow the directions on the product’s packaging and your veterinarian’s recommendations)
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Appetite changes

Is CBG For Dogs Safe?

Yes. CBG is safe for dogs. However, you should also consult with your vet and follow professional guidance before giving CBG to your pet. In the United States, CBG is legal, and pet product manufacturers can use it as long as it is derived from the hemp plant and not marijuana. In April 2021, the European Commission added CBG to its cosmetic ingredient database, meaning European producers could safely use it as an ingredient in cosmetic products.[23]

Is It Okay to Feed CBG & CBD to Your Dog At The Same Time?

Yes. Many pet owners use a dog CBD oil tincture at night as a sedative to help their dogs sleep, while CBG is used during the day to improve energy and focus.

While these two cannabinoids share similar benefits, CBG offers unique benefits, as explained above. The combination of CBD and CBG makes a powerhouse team and promotes the entourage effect. When CBD and CBG are taken together, they balance each other out and work synergistically. A research paper indicated that combining CBG, CBD, and fish oil can resolve DNBS-induced colonic inflammation and produce intestinal anti-inflammatory effects.[24]

Further research showed that CBG reduced the viability of glioblastoma tumors and stem cells comparable to THC. CBG combined with CBD was more effective than THC in inducing caspase-dependent programmed cell death. The combination of CBD and CBG worked more effectively in reducing tumor cells. The advantage of mixing these ingredients can undoubtedly boost benefits. Given their unique benefits, it’s the optimal way to combat both mental and physical ailments in pets. Below, we show you our favorite CBG: CBD (2:1) oil brand.

CBG Dosage For Dogs

The amount of CBG oil you administer to your dog will vary by manufacturer. Remember, each bottle of CBG comes in different concentrations expressed in milligrams (mg).

Underdosing is preferred at first. Monitor your dog’s response. If everything seems to be going well, shift to the manufacturer’s dosing guidelines for your specific CBG oil. Most dog CBG oil companies provide detailed dosing guidelines with their products. The CBG oil dosage for your dog will depend on its size. Some websites will include a dosing calculator. However, use the following information as general guidelines for specific conditions.

A good rule of thumb is to start with 0.25mg to 0.50mg for every 10 pounds of body weight. It’s always best to start with a smaller dose and work your way up.

WeightStarting Dose RangeHigh Dose Range
< 20 Lbs0.5 MG-1 MG3 MG

The table below is NOT a treatment recommendation but provides general guidelines many vets use.

You can use our dog CBD oil dosage calculator to calculate the proper CBG dosage for your pet.

What To Look For In CBG Oil For Dogs

  • Check for third-party testing. This will validate the quality and safety of pet CBG products.

  • Ensure all other ingredients on the label are safe for dogs.
  • 5. Aim for CO2 extraction derived CBG. It consistently produces the highest quality concentration of CBG.

With its unique properties as a cannabinoid and its emerging popularity, CBG has garnered attention for its potential benefits in supporting dogs’ overall well-being. However, it’s essential to know that research is still in progress before we can confidently back up all its benefits.

It’s key to approach CBG oil for dogs with caution. What Are CBD Dog Treats?

CBD dog treats, also known as CBD dog biscuits, chews, or cookies, are treats infused with cannabidiol (CBD) oil, a natural compound derived from the cannabis plant. CBD treats are safe for dogs to consume as they do not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychological effects. This ensures that the treats provide the potential therapeutic benefits of CBD without the psychoactive effects associated with THC.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 100 natural compounds found in cannabis plants, including marijuana and hemp. The key difference between marijuana and hemp is their THC content: marijuana contains more than 0.3% THC, while hemp contains 0.3% THC or less. This distinction is crucial for legality; hemp-derived CBD oil is legal across all 50 U.S. states, whereas marijuana remains illegal in most states.

CBD Oils Vs. CBD Treats: Is There A Difference?

Choosing between CBD dog treats and CBD oil has definite pros and cons. The primary distinction between the two is their delivery rate and bioavailability rate. CBD oil offers quicker effects as it is administered directly into your dog’s body fluids (under the tongue), which accelerates absorption. In contrast, CBD treats take longer to take effect because they have to pass through the digestive system and the liver, delaying their onset. In terms of effectiveness and benefits, both options are the same. Your primary focus should be selecting the appropriate CBD oil or CBD dog treat and administering the correct dosage for your pet.

Reasons CBD Dog Treats Are A Great Alternative to CBD Oils

How Can The Best Dog CBD Treats Help Dogs

There are several potential benefits associated with dog CBD oil. These include:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Chronic pain
  • Arthritis
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Digestive tract issues
  • Immune system
  • Emotional balance
  • Joints and flexibility
  • Cancer
  • Nervous system
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite

For a more in-depth, research-backed explanation of the benefits listed above, read our CBD oil for dogs article to learn how CBD helps with different canine health problems and other key information you need to know.

How to Choose The Best CBD Treat For Dogs

THC levels Look for CBD chews for dogs that don’t contain THC or at least less than 0.3% THC. Higher levels of THC can be harmful to your dog.
Third-party test certificate Ask the manufacturer for a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Trustworthy companies will provide a COA from an independent third party, ensuring the product passes the tests for pesticides, heavy metals, CBD percentage, THC percentage, residual solvent, and more.
Extraction method The best CBD oils are processed naturally using carbon dioxide and cold press extraction, avoiding chemical-based solvents such as butane, propane, hexane, and others.
U.S.-grown organic hemp Buy CBD products sourced from organic hemp cultivated directly by the company. The USDA-organic label and U.S. Hemp Authority certification are good indicators of hemp quality.
Potency CBD potency is vital because dogs need smaller doses and are more sensitive to cannabinoids (primarily THC) than humans. Look for companies offering multiple potency options to make choosing the right one for your dog’s size easy.
Ingredients and purity Avoid CBD products that add additives or preservatives or use toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals.
Full-Spectrum vs. Broad-Spectrum vs. Isolate You can choose from three types of CBD depending on your needs. Most vets recommend full-spectrum CBD because it’s more effective than CBD isolate due to the combined effects of CBD, terpenes, 0.3% THC, and other cannabinoids (entourage effect). If you prefer to avoid THC but still want the benefits of terpenes and other cannabinoids, your next best choice is broad-spectrum CBD. The third option is CBD isolate, which is the purest form of CBD and contains no other cannabis plant compounds.
User trust and brand reputation Look for positive customer reviews and check whether the company has been subject to an FDA warning letter or makes unsupported health claims.

If you’re considering using CBD for your dog, speak with your veterinarian first. Your vet can recommend the best type of CBD for your pet. You must also need to provide the correct CBD dosage to your pet. Use our Dog CBD dosage calculator to calculate the right amount for your dog’s specific size and learn more about dosages.

Why we recommended it: Austin & Kat Dog CBD biscuits are made with wholesome and delicious human-grade ingredients combined with broad-spectrum hemp extract rich in CBD, terpenes, and minor cannabinoids like CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid). CBDA is the acidic precursor to CBD. It is found in the raw, unprocessed cannabis plant. When the plant is heated or exposed to prolonged sunlight, CBDA converts to CBD. Research on CBDA is still in its early stages, but its unique properties suggest it may have specific applications that could be more effective than CBD, such as anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory treatments. We love they have 5 formulas to choose from for different needs.

What sets it apart from competitors: Its formulation is boosted with superfoods like flaxseed, oats, and coconut oil for additional health benefits. It also includes Longvida™ Optimized Turmeric, a clinically tested extract designed to effectively deliver the active antioxidants of turmeric throughout your pet’s body, including the brain and nervous system. This extract ensures that the natural compounds in turmeric remain active in your pet’s body for much longer, enhancing the treatment’s overall effectiveness.

Types of Cannabis Dog Treat

There are three types of cannabis-derived treats for dogs.

CBD Dog Treats

CBD can treat many common dog health problems, including anxiety, cancer pain, arthritis, and seizures. The main difference between CBD dog treats and marijuana or hemp dog treats is that CBD dog treats contain absolutely zero THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid, so you don’t have to worry about your pup getting ‘high.’ Dogs can reap health benefits from Cannabidiol thanks to CBD dog treats.

Marijuana Dog Treats (Weed Dog Treats)

The main difference between marijuana and CBD or hemp dog treats is that THC levels in marijuana are substantially higher. Depending on your weed strain, THC levels can go from 0.4 to 30%. If your dog eats marijuana (weed dog treats), it will get high. And, if a dog ingests too much, it can be life-threatening. Therefore, giving marijuana to dogs is not advised.

Hemp Treats For Dogs

Dog hemp chews and treats are safe for dogs to consume and provide certain benefits. However, Hemp dog treats are not the same as CBD dog treats. The main difference is that hemp oil (hemp treats for dogs like this one from HolistaPet ) has no CBD. Hemp contains less than 0.3% THC and will not get your dog high.

Dog CBD Treats Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your dog’s body, dosage amount, CBD mg per treat, weight, and other factors. However, the effects of CBD treats can generally last an average of 4-8 hours at a time. If you notice the effects of CBD wearing off faster, slowly increase the dosage to maintain the same positive results.

It depends on your dog’s condition, how long they’ve taken CBD, and the dosage. CBD treats can take 30-90 minutes to kick in for conditions like situational anxiety. However, if you’re using it to treat arthritis or immune system issues, it can take two weeks to see consistent improvement. Read our article on how long CBD stays in a dog’s system for a more in-depth understanding of how CBD dog treats are processed in your dog’s system.

Due to cannabis regulations and laws, not all big-box retailers carry CBD products. For instance, Walmart, Amazon, and Chewy do not have any CBD products available today. They do have hemp products, but remember, hemp-based pet products do not offer the same benefits as CBD. Stores like Petsmart and Petco carry a limited variety of CBD dog products. For instance, Petco sells Liposomes CBD oil for dogs from Pet Releaf.

Yes. Several studies on animals and anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggest CBD dog treats can treat pain and control seizures, anxiety, and other dog health issues.

While big-box pet stores like PetSmart and Petco may offer CBD dog treats in Las Vegas, you are more likely to find the best CBD dog treat options by shopping online. You can also try smaller stores around the Las Vegas Valley.

There is a lot of discussion on Reddit about the effectiveness of CBD dog treats. We saw many concerned dog owners asking others for validity and testimonials of other dog parents who have used CBD on their pets. We identified that roughly 75% of the testimonials and commentaries on Reddit threads are positive stories, meaning CBD treats are helping dogs.

If you want to buy CBD dog treats in bulk, our top pick companies offer wholesale deals for you or your business. You can purchase wholesale dog treats from HolistaPet, Honest Paws, or Joy Organics (Private Label).

According to the ASPCA, products sold as ‘soft chews’ have an osmotic effect when ingested in large amounts. In mild cases, this can cause diarrhea and dehydration.

Vomiting can be a side effect of giving your dog CBD, but it’s rare with treats. While CBD oil is bitter, and your pet may not enjoy its taste and reject it, CBD dog treats successfully mask the flavor of this oil thanks to all the other ingredients in the treat.

If you have a dog prone to high anxiety, seizures, fear, or other more severe problems like joint pain or even cancer, CBD treats significantly improve the wellness and health of your pet. The negative side of CBD is minimal. The worst thing is that your dog can get high from eating too many treats accidentally. This is very rare since CBD has 0% THC.
